Stormont-Vail is encouraging Emporia and Lyon County leaders to attend its latest rendition of “A Day in the Life.”
The all-day event Oct. 17 at Stormont-Vail in Topeka will see a range of information presentations from hospital administrators as well as behind-the-scenes tours of different areas of interest like the cardiac cath lab, emergency department, helipad, neonatal intensive care unit, operating room and trauma room.
Invited residents are asked to RSVP to Stormont-Vail Foundation representative Lori Franken by email at lfranken@stormontvail.org or by phone at 785-354-6851.
The Day in the Life event comes as the city of Emporia is anticipating an annexation request from Stormont-Vail regarding recently-purchased property at the southwest corner of Roads 180 and G, currently just outside the city limits. Stormont is looking to build a better than $30 million “freestanding ambulatory” clinic in Emporia. Hospital administrators have mentioned on KVOE’s airwaves the Emporia facility will resemble one built in Manhattan, which offers primary care, specialty care, lab and imaging services — offerings also provided to a certain extent by Newman Regional Health.
Newman Regional Health has filed a list of potential zoning code changes to halt that and similar future requests from outside hospitals while protecting its financial interests and giving city leaders more oversight into the process. City Manager Trey Cocking has said the two hospitals, which halted a mediated conversation process in July, have until Sept. 13 to reach some sort of an agreement on future operations before the city will consider any Stormont annexation request on its own merits.
