Monday night was just a taste of game action for the Emporia High volleyball team at Spartan Gymnasium.
For the second consecutive year, the Lady Spartans hosted Lebo and Osage City for a jamboree. Emporia High coach Ping Wang said there’s potential with this group.
Emporia High went 25-12 in 2023 and graduated six seniors. This season, the Lady Spartans have three seniors, Sadie Rethman, Ryane Howe and Adeiah Heffner. Rethman said this year’s team has come together as one.
Other returners for Emporia High include junior Jade Xu, a two-team first-team All-Centennial League selection. Xu is also one of 25 players in Class 5A to watch according to KSHSAA Covered. Also returning is junior Harley Smith. Newcomers to the team are juniors Elodie Bueno and Molly Williams and sophomores Kaylee Dewitt and Aubree Hess.
Emporia High opens the season on Saturday in the AVCTL Preseason Tournament in Hutchinson. The first home triangular the Lady Spartans will host will be on Sept. 19 against Salina South and Topeka West.
