Several traffic campaigns are currently underway for the KVOE listening area.
The annual “You Drink, You Drive, You Lose” effort runs through Labor Day as law enforcement officials look for any and all signs of impaired driving. Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch says impaired driving is far too prevalent on highways and byways.
Koelsch also says legitimate prescriptions can also negatively affect a driver’s judgement.
“You Drink, You Drive, You Lose” features extra law enforcement on area roads looking for all traffic infractions, but especially signs of impaired driving.
Meanwhile, the Kansas Department of Transportation, Kansas Department of Health and Environment and Safe Kids Kansas are partnering again to reward safe drivers with the annual “Bucks for Buckles” campaign underway now through Sept. 8. Volunteers are giving dollar bills to drivers who have all occupants securely buckled — and information materials about the effectiveness of seatbelts or child safety seats to those riding unrestrained.
On top of those efforts, Emporia State University is joining the Kansas Department of Transportation’s “Fans With a Plan” program. As part of this yearlong initiative, fans attending athletic or other campus events where alcohol is served are encouraged to pledge not to drink and drive. If they choose to drink alcoholic beverages, they pledge to use a designated driver or rideshare app.
The “Fans With a Plan” program is part of the Kansas Drive to Zero safety campaign and is partnering with a range of sports and entertainment venues across Kansas.
Emporia State begins its football season with its home opener against archrival Washburn at 7 pm Thursday, with the Live at the Hive tailgate party beginning at 4:30 pm. Mix 104.9 FM and KVOE.com will have play-by-play coverage all season long.
