Our current period of heat and humidity is about to be replaced.
High temperatures Thursday will be in the mid-90s with heat index readings around 100. A cold front could bring showers and storms to the area by early evening, although the more likely chances for shower and storm activity will be late Thursday night into the pre-dawn hours Friday. Severe weather should stay just north of the KVOE on-air signal coverage area, but storms could pause the Emporia State-Washburn football season opener at Welch Stadium due to lightning if they move across the area between 7-10 pm.
Behind the front, showers and storms are now likely into early Friday afternoon. Cooler temperatures are guaranteed, with a high of 82 degrees. Low to mid-80s are possible Saturday and Sunday, with high temperatures in the upper 70s for the Labor Day holiday.
KVOE and KVOE.com will have updates.
