After nearly a year, Lyon County Extension once again has a full-time 4H agent as announced earlier this month.
Rhett Newby has filled the vacancy left by Corrine Patterson who served as the county’s 4H agent for over a decade before taking on a full-time ranching position last year. Newby may be new to Lyon County’s Extension office, however, he is no stranger to 4H as he noted during an interview on KVOE’s Morning Show recently.
Newby participated in 4H from the ages of 7 to 18 and even served for a short time as the agriculture and natural resources agent for Pratt County where he also held “partial 4H responsibilities.” A graduate of Kansas State University, Newby came to Emporia a little over a year ago where he worked as a team lead for Cargill’s Emporia facility.
During his interview with KVOE, Newby stated his time in Pratt County coupled with his role with Cargill have helped give him the necessary tools to step into the 4H agent position.
In terms of his major objectives in the near future, Newby tells KVOE News outreach to local schools is a top priority for him at this time. Newby says he is very interested in providing after-school or in-school programming that goes beyond typical in-school learning opportunities.
That goal will fall perfectly in line with Newby’s list of duties which includes developing and delivering educational programs for schoolkids, including school enrichment, program outreach, community club support, out-of-school programs and volunteer management.
