A Missouri man escaped serious injuries after a crash on the Kansas Turnpike near Emporia on Tuesday.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says the crash developed at around 7:45 am at mile marker 131 northbound, a mile southwest of the Emporia service exit and four miles northeast of the Emporia tollgate. Troopers say a pickup driven by 59-year-old Stuart Klaus went off the Turnpike and “vaulted” onto Road K after Klaus fell asleep at the wheel.
Emporia Fire/EMS took Klaus to Newman Regional Health for treatment of suspected minor injuries. He was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Emporia Fire/EMS was toned out to the Kansas Turnpike at mile marker 131, just south of the Emporia service exit and four miles northeast of the Emporia tollgate, shortly before 8 am. Early indications are one person and one vehicle are involved, but confirmation is pending.
