After a lengthy absence, a creative community event is making its way back to the local activity calendar later this month.
The Emporia Arts Center will be hosting Chalk Fest on Saturday, September 21 in the 800 block of Commercial Street. The festival began back in 2001 and sees participants create colorful works of art on the pavement of downtown Emporia.
The event is open to both individuals and groups with organizers saying there is no required number of team members, however, they recommend groups consist of five to seven members. This will be the first time Chalk Fest has taken place in Emporia in roughly 15 years.
Organizers Sarah Barrett and Amy Gonzales recently joined KVOE’s Morning Show to discuss the event with Barrett saying she was inspired to bring it back to the community after finding a box of mementos from the inaugural event in the EAC archives.
Gonzales says she is excited for the festival’s return for several reasons.
The event will take place from 8 am to 5 pm with participants having a 10-foot by 6.5 foot space to chalk.
The theme of the event is fall and aside from the artwork, Chalk Fest will also include food trucks, a kids zone and live music.
For those interested in participating in Chalk Fest, you can register online at emporiaksarts.org/chalk-fest or you can register in person the day of the event.
