Turnout was heavy for the Emporia Municipal Airport this weekend, and with good reason.
The airport had its annual Wings and Wheels open house Saturday, including chances for children ages 8-17 to get free plane rides courtesy of Young Eagles. Founding member of EAA 1535 Marah Carney says growing up in a flying family gave her a unique perspective on the joys of flying from an early age.
Saturday’s activities also included static plane and vehicle displays from the Emporia Flying Club and Flatland Cruisers, respectively, as well as breakfast through the Area Experimental Aircraft Association.
Friday brought more people to the airport through the annual Fly Kansas Air Tour, which brought small airplanes from across the state to Emporia and also offered Emporia fifth-graders and Emporia Imaginarium students a chance to see planes up close. KVOE’s Tagan Trahoon got to take a short flight and posted a video to KVOE’s social media channels.
This comes as the airport has several notable projects underway or coming soon, according to Assistant Airport Manager Julian Seaman.
