The Emporia High football team had two costly turnovers that resulted in 14 points as Wichita West defeated the Spartans, 40-12, Friday night at Welch Stadium.
Wichita West had two interceptions in the first quarter, one that turned into a 6-yard touchdown run by Mencali En. The Pioneer tacked on 14 more points in the second quarter for a 21-0 lead at halftime.
The Pioneers extended their lead to 28 before Emporia High got 1-yard touchdown run by Micah Gray with 6:53 left in the third quarter. The Pioneers recorded a third interception which was turned into a touchdown to make it 34-6 and tacked on their final score with 8:20 to play. The Spartans got their final touchdown in the fourth quarter with Gray finding Javen Arndt for a 16-yard touchdown with 4:11 remaining.
Gray threw for 220 yards and had two touchdowns. Arndt led Emporia High with six catches for 126 yards and a touchdown.
Emporia High continues its 3-game homestand against Coffeyville next Friday at Welch Stadium. The RV-Doc Pregame Show will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Mix 104.9.
