The Emporia State soccer team escaped with a tie after a late score Wednesday at the ESU Soccer Pitch in a 1-1 draw with Drury. The Panthers sustained pressure on the ESU end of the field throughout the match outshooting the Lady Hornets 22-5 including 8-2 on goal. Drury had six corners to zero for E-State. Drury got on the board with less than five minutes left in the first half on a penalty kick. An Ella Ruliffson free kick from near midfield bounced off a Drury defender and in with less than 10 minutes to go to tie the match. Goalkeeper Mackenzi Goen had seven saves for Emporia State and says the Lady Hornets are ready for conference play.
Head coach Jane Grimley-Gunn was proud of the way her team held up defensively.
ESU moves to 2-2-1 on the year while Drury moves to 3-0-2. ESU has the weekend off before opening up MIAA play at home Friday, September 27, against Newman. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
