Parts of Prairie Street are dealing with an unplanned closure from earlier in the week. A planned blockage is now in effect further north.
Prairie is now closed to thru traffic near the Hillcrest Drive and 24th Avenue intersections for work as part of the 24th and Prairie waterline replacement project. New 24-inch-diameter pipe will be installed Thursday and possibly Friday.
This is among the very early steps in Phase 2 of this major infrastructure improvement. Work has already finished on 24th from the Water Treatment Plant east to Prairie, including work under Interstate 35. West 24th reopened to traffic earlier this month. Work on Prairie with move south to 12th and will including rolling street blockages of about 100 feet per day through summer or fall 2025.
Meanwhile, Prairie remains blocked between 12th and Park Avenue after a 20-inch line ruptured Monday morning, buckling the street and also causing other subsurface damage. It could well be next week before the street reopens at that location.
