Showers and storms basically died as they approached Emporia early Thursday morning. They also skirted the KVOE signal area well south of Emporia on Thursday night.
The evening round prompted a severe thunderstorm watch for Greenwood County, but that watch was canceled without any severe weather reports.
In between the storms, it got hot. Air temperatures climbed to 100 degrees at the Emporia Municipal Airport, just short of the daily record of 101 degrees set back in 1954. Heat index readings climbed as high as 103.
Friday won’t be as hot as Thursday, but it will still be uncomfortable with a high of 93. There is a moderate chance of showers and storms between midnight and sunrise Saturday, with a marginal severe weather risk along and north of a line from Eureka to Lebo to Paola. Winds up to 60 mph are the main concern, with hail up to quarter size possible but less likely. There is a slight chance of showers and storms through Saturday, but showers and embedded storms are likely Saturday night and for most of Sunday.
