Homecoming activities at Emporia State University will include recognitions of several people and organizations for their contributions.
Retiring State Senator Jeff Longbine and his wife, Gwen, will receive the Presidential Award for ESU & Community Advancement in Kansas. Longbine, who is retiring after 14 years representing the 17th District, was instrumental in supporting the ESU restructuring model the past several years. Gwen Longbine has used her experience in appraisal, media sales and real estate, as well as her membership in Women for ESU, to support fundraising ventures and support both students and employees.
Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow will get the Presidential Award for Community Partnerships. HOTT has awarded over $100,000 in scholarships to students of Hispanic heritage, and it has developed popular community events like Cinco de Mayo and Dia de los Muertos.
KVOE will receive the Presidential Award for Media Excellence for its consistent, balanced reporting, commitment to serving the area and its recently-developed role as flagship for the Hornet Sports Network.
