One of Emporia’s newest housing developments now has physical structures erected.
According to an update on the Mahtropolis subdivision from City Manager Trey Cocking on KVOE’s Q&A With Trey Monday, five permits for the housing development, located near the Trusler Sports Complex, have been pulled with vertical construction underway on three of the homes. Mahtropolis is adding nearly 30 single-family homes on the property with Cocking saying it will be a phase-by-phase project.
A timeline for when all homes will be constructed is currently pending, however, Cocking says once they are up and available the average cost of a single home could run between $225,000-$250,000. Mahtropolis, as previously mentioned, is one of three developments in the works to help address the need for affordable housing within Emporia, a need that has been well-noted by local leadership over the past several years.
However; with the price tag of each home mentioned by Cocking, KVOE News asked if those homes could be considered affordable to the average home buyer. While he admits the price tag may not be attainable for all residents, the addition of the homes will create a greater supply which could lead to prices dropping elsewhere.
As for Emporia’s other developments, Cocking tells KVOE News construction has yet to begin on Kretsinger and a development agreement is currently pending for the Lockwood Heights development. Kretsinger near David Traylor Zoo will bring over 50 homes to that new neighborhood.
Lockwood meanwhile, located near West Sixth and Stratford, is planning to add over 20 new homes to the area.
