Old and new are on the community calendar as the United Way of the Flint Hills continues the early stages of its 2024-25 fundraising drive.
In the new category: Dunkapalooza, which took place during the first half of Emporia High’s home football game at Welch Stadium. United Way Drive Chair Tagan Trahoon says the presence of the dunkees helped to make for a great atmosphere.
Fundraising totals are pending.
In the existing category: the upcoming United Way fundraising concert, courtesy the Emporia State University Department of Music. Professor Gary Ziek says it makes sense for the department to support the United Way, given its mission and reach.
Thursday’s concert begins at 7:30 pm at Albert Taylor Hall, featuring the ESU Faculty Jazz Combo and ESU Jazz Ensemble. It’s free to attend but a freewill donation is requested.
Upcoming activities include Small Business Blitz and at least two new events: a video game tournament early next year and a talent show. Trahoon is also working on a community-wide hide-and-seek event, although details on that are pending.
The drive will benefit over 20 community partners offering a range of services in Lyon, Chase, Coffey, Greenwood, Morris, Osage, Wabaunsee and Woodson counties. this year’s fundraising goal is $500,000.
