Community members, many of who have shared a similar journey in life, came together at Peter Pan Park Saturday afternoon to celebrate life, success and most of all their sobriety.
The annual Recovery in the Park, organized by Corner House, welcomed several families and individuals to Peter Pan over four hours for food and togetherness. Corner House Director Rod Shepherd, a recovering addict himself, says small gatherings like Saturdays can often have the most tremendous impact on an individual during their road to recovery.
Shepherd adds that events like this are also great for those who are not in recovery saying it can be a very eye-opening experience. Acknowledging the stigma that often revolves around those in recovery, Shepherd says it may surprise many to know that those who have battled and beaten addiction often go on to do amazing things.
Shepherd summed up recovery in the park by calling it a celebration of the small and large victories addicts have made throughout their lives and their commitment to moving forward. That wasn’t the only reason to celebrate, however, as Shepherd noted Corner House is getting set to celebrate its 50th anniversary next year and is in the process of expanding its reach thanks to a recent merger announcement.
As KVOE News has reported in recent weeks, Corner House will be merging with Crosswinds Counseling and Wellness. The merger, which is expected to be complete by New Year’s Day will include a complete “folding in” of Corner House’s substance use treatment plan, as well as its facility at 418 Market, staff and management, including Shepherd.
