Next year the City of Emporia will be “passing fees back” to credit card users.
That’s according to City Director of Finance Janet Harouff who spoke with KVOE News Wednesday following the Emporia City Commission’s passage of a new credit card processing fee as part of their regular action meeting. Harouff explains the new fee came about as a result of increased processing fees through various credit card companies which has taken a significant financial toll on the city.
Harouff says that if things were to remain as they are, the city could end up paying between $175,000 to $180,000 by the end of 2024. Enter the new processing fee which Harouff says will be minimal to residents, but significant in terms of cost savings for the city.
The new processing fee, which will go into effect on January 1, will add $2 to all credit card payments of $66.50 or less. Any charges over $66.50 will lead to a fee of three percent of the charged amount.
The new fee will only apply to credit card payments and will have no impact on those paying bills or charges by cash, check or electronic fund transfer (ECF). For questions or clarification on the upcoming changes to credit card payments contact the city finance department by calling 620-343-4286.
