The speaker at Emporia State University’s Hayes Leadership Lecture says his time on campus helped to get him ready for the real world in several ways.
Dennis Brockman, Class of 1987, says he got valuable information about the business world from people who a range of different experiences. He also says his time at ESU was valuable for another reason.
Brockman worked at Starbucks, Aramark and Wendy’s as part of his life after college. Now he’s back at Starbucks as Senior Vice President for US Retail Operations. He espouses a servant leadership approach, and he says his role is to make life easier for employees and customers.
Brockman’s appearance at the Sam and Jeannene Hayes Leadership Lecture is one of the early Homecoming activities on campus. Also underway now is the Phi Delta Theta Pole Sit benefiting SOS and performances of the Homecoming musical, “She Loves Me.”
Friday’s activity schedule involves the Black and Gold Progressive Reception at 4:30 pm and Gala Dinner at 7 pm, including the Presidential Awards — Jeff and Gwen Longbine for ESU and Community Advancement, Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow for Community Partnerships and KVOE for Media Excellence. The Bonfire and Hornet Rally is at 8 pm.
Saturday’s event list includes open houses, campus tours, the Homecoming parade at 10 am and the Homecoming football game against Northeastern State at 2 pm. Pregame will be at 1 pm on Mix 104.9 FM and the Hornet Sports Network.
