The Emporia State volleyball team used a 29-kill performance from Weronicka Wrzesinska to win their home opener 27-25, 25-16, 25-22 at White Auditorium Friday night. ESU claimed a tight first set with eight tie scores and three lead changes outhitting the Gorillas .291 to .250. Wrzesinska started hot with 12 terminations in the opening period. The Lady Hornets took a 20-14 lead late in set two and used a 6-2 run late to close out the set while siding out at 93% in the frame. The Lady Hornets build a 19-15 lead in the third before a lengthy delay as officials stopped play to check on the Pitt State rotation. The break took ESU out of sync and the teams combined for six service errors out of the next seven points and the Gorillas went on a 4-0 run to cut the deficit to 22-21, but ESU responded with back-to-back kills by Wrzesinska to win the match. She said despite some early nerves, it was great to be at home.
Head coach Ken Murczek said Wrzesinska had a great week of practice.
The 29 terminations by Wrzesinska were the most in the country in a three-set match this season by seven. McKenya Sorrells led ESU with five blocks while Brailee Bogle tallied 40 assists. ESU (10-3, 2-1 MIAA) returns to White Auditorium Saturday to host Newman with first serve set at 7:00 p.m.
