Friday’s list of homecoming activities at Emporia State University included a time of recognition of several individuals and entities that have made significant contributions to the university.
The 2024 Presidential Awards were handed out as part of the ESU Black and Gold Gala Friday evening and recognized retiring State Senator Jeff Longbine and his wife, Gwen, with the Award for ESU & Community Advancement in Kansas. Among their contributions to the university was the instrumental role Jeff Longbine played in supporting the ESU restructuring model the past several years. Gwen Longbine, meanwhile, has played a significant role in fundraising for the university through her experience in appraisal, media sales and real estate, as well as her membership in Women for ESU.
Meanwhile, Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow received the Presidential Award for Community Partnerships recognizing both the organization’s contribution of over $100,000 in scholarships to students of Hispanic heritage as well as the development of many popular community events like Cinco de Mayo and Dia de los Muertos. Finally, KVOE was given the Presidential Award for Media Excellence for its consistent, balanced reporting, commitment to serving the area and its recently-developed role as flagship for the Hornet Sports Network.
KVOE Station Manager Ron Thomas says he is proud to see the work of the station’s news and sports departments recognized, but also for the university to pay special attention to the work KVOE does throughout the Emporia community.
Friday’s list of homecoming activities concluded with the annual bonfire and Hornet Rally. Activities will continue, and conclude, Saturday with open houses, campus tours, the homecoming parade at 10 am and the Homecoming football game against Northeastern State at 2 pm. Pregame will be at 1 pm on Mix 104.9 FM and the Hornet Sports Network.
