A special traffic enforcement effort begins Sunday across Kansas.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is involved, along with Chase County and law enforcement agencies across the state, in a special seatbelt enforcement effort through Saturday. This effort follows stats from 2022, where 18 children ages 0-13 were killed due to car crashes, including nine that were not properly restrained. It also follows an observational seatbelt study from 2022 indicating 97 percent of children in vehicles were restrained if the driver was buckled while only 30 percent of children were buckled or in car seats if the driver was not buckled.
The effort includes extra enforcement around schools. Citations will be issued for violations.
