It’s deep breath time for election workers across the state of Kansas.
The general election is Nov. 5, and the schedule begins heating up in earnest next week. The voter registration deadline is Oct. 15, with advance voting by mail starting Oct. 16 — the same day when Lyon County opens up offsite advance voting at the Fairgrounds Anderson Building. Hours are:
*Oct. 17: 10 am to 7 pm
*Oct. 18: 10 am to 4 pm
*Oct. 19: 9 am to 1 pm
Advance voting at the County Courthouse will go from Oct. 21 through noon Nov. 4. Mail ballots need to either be returned or postmarked by the Nov. 5 election date for them to count towards final totals.
On KVOE’s Morning Show on Monday, Lyon County Election Officer Tammy Vopat reminded residents about the electioneering rules.
Lingering questions continue about election integrity after the 2020 presidential election, and a Colorado county clerk was recently sentenced to nine years in prison and jail for a vote tampering scheme. Vopat says election integrity and public trust are paramount for her and her staff.
Before the general election, KVOE has its on-air and online Candidate Forums beginning this week:
*Thursday: Kansas House 60th District involving Democrat Mic McGuire and Republican incumbent Mark Schreiber.
*Oct. 15: Lyon County Commission Second District featuring Democrat Ron McCoy and republican incumbent Doug Peck.
*Oct. 17: Kansas Senate 17th District featuring Republican Mike Argabright and Democrat Lillian Lingenfelter.
*Oct. 22: Lyon County Commission Third District featuring Republican Chris Bartel and Democrat Bill Nienstedt.
All programs begin at 10:06 am and will feature questions from KVOE News and KVOE listeners.
