KVOE News began its Candidate Forum slate of on-air interviews with a look at the Kansas House 60th District.
Democrat Mic McGuire and Republican incumbent Mark Schreiber are facing off for the second straight election cycle.
Candidates were asked about drug policy, including prospects of legalizing marijuana and potential steps to slow down fentanyl traffic. Schreiber supports medical marijuana. He hasn’t decided on recreational use.
McGuire believes both medical and recreational marijuana should be allowed.
On education, Emporia State University’s ongoing reinvestment process was also mentioned, with the university fielding millions of dollars in one-time funding while enrollment continues to decline — including a smaller-than-expected dip reported last week. McGuire says ESU needs to see enrollment increases so lawmakers from elsewhere across Kansas will be willing to continue those levels of funding.
Schreiber says lawmakers will continue supporting regional universities like Emporia State, although the nature of that funding may be adjusted.
Candidate Forums resume next week:
*Oct. 15: Lyon County Commission Second District featuring Democrat Ron McCoy and Republican incumbent Doug Peck.
*Oct. 17: Kansas Senate 17th District featuring Republican Mike Argabright and Democrat Lillian Lingenfelter.
*Oct. 22: Lyon County Commission Third District featuring Republican Chris Bartel and Democrat Bill Nienstedt.
All programs begin at 10:06 am and will feature questions from KVOE News and KVOE listeners. Programs will also be stored in the KVOE.com Audio Vault.
