Flint Hills Technical College was the host site for the third and newest car show fundraiser courtesy of Beacon For Hope Sunday afternoon.
The first annual car show benefiting the FHTC food pantry saw a strong turnout which nearly filled the college’s parking lot. FHTC Dean of Enrollment Management Brenda Carmichael says the college reached out to Beacon and St. Mark’s Lutheran Church to organize the event following a similar show that took place last year benefiting Emporia State University’s food pantry Corky’s Cupboard.
Pastor Kent Happel of St. Mark’s says whenever someone reaches out for help, the church and Beacon will always do what they can to help meet the need.
In addition to the cars on display, the show also featured HotWheels races and awards for the top cars in various categories. FHTC Computerized Machine Tool Engineering program students created the trophies for Sunday’s awards.
Carmichael says the hands-on experience for their students coupled with the assistance to the food pantry made Sunday’s event a major win-win for the college.
Sunday’s car show was the third organized by Beacon in as many weeks. The list also included a show as part first annual Rage Against the Stigma event on September 29 aimed at raising awareness for men’s mental health and the second annual Hope With Horsepower event benefiting veteran suicide prevention services October 5.
Brady Kurtenbach of Beacon For Hope says he’s had the opportunity to speak with many individuals at the events over the last few weeks and based on the feedback the shows are having a tremendous impact within the community.
Fundraising totals from Sunday’s Car Show are currently pending.
