The month of October is domestic violence awareness month and representatives of SOS Inc. are encouraging residents to discuss the topic and be well informed of the warning signs.
Danielle Armitage of SOS, a recent guest of KVOE’s Morning Show, says the most common sign of domestic violence is just that, violent behavior or injuries related to physical abuse. However; Armitage explains that domestic violence can occur in many ways not just physically.
According to statistics shared by SOS, last year the agency provided more than 14,000 domestic violence awareness services across the local area. Statewide, Armitage says cases of domestic violence have been on the rise in recent months.
When it comes to behavioral signs of domestic violence, Armitage says residents should be mindful of isolation, either by a victim or at the behest of their partner, possessiveness, jealousy, hypersensitivity, verbal abuse and sudden mood swings just to name a few. When asked what the best course of action is for victims Armitage stated speaking to an advocate, such as those at SOS, and safety planning are the best paths forward.
Armitage notes the most dangerous time for a domestic violence victim is when they are planning to leave their abuser. With that in mind, she says it is best practice to have a plan in place and code words with a friend or advocate who can alert them if something is wrong.
If you or someone you know is the victim of domestic violence you can contact SOS by calling their 24-hour hotline 1-800-825-1295 or text SOSKS to 847411.
