Relationships at the county level, whether internal or external, were a focal point of KVOE’s latest Candidate Forum.
KVOE News focused on the Second District race involving Democrat challenger Ron McCoy and Republican incumbent Doug Peck, with questions including the role Lyon County should take during the ongoing conversations between Newman Regional Health and Stormont Vail. McCoy says Lyon County isn’t doing nearly enough to participate — or to protect Newman Regional Health.
Peck says he and the current County Commission are taking several steps to continue the conversations between the hospitals.
When asked about the financial support Lyon County has traditionally given a list of allocation agencies, Peck says all the entities deserve county funds.
McCoy says allocation agencies need to justify their requests when presented.
The KVOE Candidate Forum unofficially serves as the launch point for a busy week when it comes to elections, including the end of voter registration Tuesday and the start of advance vote processes Wednesday. County Clerk and Election Officer Tammy Vopat says the premise of all the county’s advance voting options is simple:
Mail ballots go out Wednesday. They must be returned or postmarked by Nov. 5, Election Day, for them to be counted. They also have to be requested no later than Oct. 29.
Special voting hours at the Fairgrounds Anderson Building will be 10 am to 7 pm both Wednesday and Thuursday, along with 10 am to 4 pm Friday and 9 am to 1 pm Saturday. In-office advance voting begins Monday at the Lyon County Courthouse.
KVOE’s Candidate Forums resume later this week:
*Thursday: Kansas Senate 17th District featuring Republican Mike Argabright and Democrat Lillian Lingenfelter.
*Oct. 22: Lyon County Commission Third District featuring Republican Chris Bartel and Democrat Bill Nienstedt.
All programs begin at 10:06 am and will feature questions from KVOE News and KVOE listeners. Programs will also be stored in the KVOE.com Audio Vault.
