It won’t last long, but a freeze is expected early Wednesday.
The National Weather Service has upgraded freeze watches announced earlier in the week to freeze warnings. All area counties are now included from 1-9 am, with overnight lows in the upper 20s expected at the Emporia Municipal Airport and possibly cooler temperatures to our north.
The Weather Service says these temperatures could kill sensitive plants if they are exposed, so landowners should either move those plants indoors or cover them. There could be issues with outdoor plumbing, so property owners should either disconnect or drain those fixtures.
Cooler fall temperatures mean a lot of people are restarting their furnaces for the first time in months. Emporia Fire Marshal Reason Bradford says this is a good time to make sure your heaters are in good working order.
Bradford also says residents need to get their fireplaces and chimneys checked and serviced as soon as possible.
As far as Emporia’s two most recent house fires, 206 South Union on Sunday and 909 Thompson on Thursday, there is no official word on how either got started.
