After a disappointing turnout for the primary election cycle, advance voting at the Lyon County Fairgrounds Anderson Building already has Lyon County Election Officer Tammy Vopat in high spirits with the general election fast approaching.
That’s because the offsite voting event managed to far surpass the entire advance voter turnout for the primary in just four days’ time. To be exact, the turnout was already well above the primary total within the first two days of the event with more than 1,500 individuals stopping by the Anderson Building by the end of the offsite event Saturday afternoon.
Vopat was ecstatic with the turnout and says while she couldn’t put her finger on exactly what has led to the significant turnout, she is very pleased to see so many residents stepping up and taking advantage of the opportunity to cast their ballots.
Vopat says she is looking for a 70 percent or better voter turnout for the entire general election and she is very confident they can hit that goal based on the turnout for the offsite event.
With offsite voting wrapped up, advance voting will continue at the Lyon County Courthouse starting Monday and continuing through noon Nov. 4. According to Vopat 750 mail ballots were sent out to voters on Wednesday and those wishing to receive a mail ballot still have time to request one with the deadline coming up Oct. 29.
Mail ballots must be returned or postmarked by Election Day, Nov. 5, for them to be counted in the general election. In other election matters, KVOE will be closing out its series of candidate forums this week as Tuesday we will be joined by the candidates for the Lyon County Commission Third District seat Republican Chris Bartel and Democrat Bill Nienstedt.
The forum will begin at 10:05 am and will be available in the KVOE.com Audio Vault shortly after its completion.
