“It’s the best breakfast in town.”
Those were the words of Sertoma Club member Terri Summey as she spoke with KVOE News during the annual Sertoma Club scholarship breakfast Saturday morning. Judging by the turnout for the event, it’s safe to say many would agree with that assertion as hundreds of residents passed through the Emporia Senior Center over four hours to enjoy a hot meal consisting of biscuits and gravy, biscuit sandwiches, eggs and sausage.
All proceeds from the breakfast will go to benefit scholarships for students at Emporia State University and Flint Hills Technical College. Summey says while they do try to “fund everyone” the scholarships traditionally focus on students in the medical and health field.
Lending a hand to the breakfast this year were members of the Emporia State University Women’s basketball team along with coach Brian Osterman. KVOE spoke with Osterman and asked why it is so important for the team to take part in such a major event on the community calendar.
Osterman says it is a great opportunity to connect with the community while also giving back to it.
Fundraising totals from the breakfast are currently pending. In prior years the breakfast has allowed the club to distribute between $10,000 to $12,000 in scholarships.
