Emporia High junior Elise Eckert is in eighth place at the Class 5A State Golf Championships in Salina. Eckert finished day one at +7 and was four strokes behind clubhouse leader Naomi Koontz of Newton. At the Class 3-2-1A State Golf Championships at Emporia Golf Course, Osage City’s Peyton Pitts is tied for fifth after a +15 round on day one. It’ll be a duel for the state title today with Amelia Bowles of Rawlins County holding a one-shot edge over Margaret Ulrich of Wichita Collegiate. Harley Wade of Prairie View is 9 shots back of the lead in 3rd with Celeste Schneider in 4th at +14 for Jayhawk-Linn. As a team, Osage City missed the cut for day two finishing in 11th. Pitts will tee off at 10:20 a.m.
The first round was not completed in Salina yesterday – golfers will resume their rounds at 8:00 a.m. today with the second round to follow. The 6A championships at Carey Park in Hutchinson are also incomplete after day 1 with 9 of the top 10 players on the leaderboard still on the course. Brook Savolt of Garden City is the leader in the clubhouse at +4, but Kinsley Jones of Maize is -1 through 13. There were delays and damp courses elsewhere, but the 3-2-1A and 4A championships will begin second round action as scheduled Tuesday morning.
