Flu numbers this year are relatively mild, however, that could change along with the weather.
During the Lyon County Commission’s regular action meeting Thursday morning, CareArc staff and administration presented the health center’s quarterly update, which focused on all areas of operations, including public health. Leading that update was Public Health Officer Dr. Ladun Oyenuga, who noted there have yet to be any major spikes in flu cases thus far, which is somewhat atypical for this time of year.
Dr. Oyenuga says the most common timeframe for flu case spikes is between October and the holidays, and the non-seasonal weather conditions that have been in place over the past month could be a factor in this trend. Once colder temperatures become the norm, Dr. Oyenuga says the local area could see a sudden and sharp spike in cases.
When it comes to precautions, Dr. Oyenuga says residents should keep safe distances from those with flu-like symptoms, practice good hand hygiene and get their annual flu vaccine. This year’s vaccine is a trivalent dose that, according to Dr. Oyenuga, will provide 50 percent coverage for patients.
In other business Thursday, commissioners approved a quote totaling more than $9,900 for a folding single-man basket for the Lyon County Highway Department’s sign truck. Commissioners will reconvene for their regular action meeting next Thursday inside the Lyon County Courthouse Commission Chambers beginning at 9 a.m.
