The Emporia Fire Department was active Tuesday thanks to extremely gusty conditions throughout the day.
According to Emporia Fire Captain Michael Nunley, though there was elevated fire danger in place, EFD did not respond to any fire-related calls. However; crews did respond to three downed line calls at 521 Southeast Street in front of Logan Avenue Elementary School, 1309 Woodland Street and 709 Industrial within a 20-minute timeframe between 3:55 pm and 4:15 pm.
According to Nunley the downed lines at Southeast and Industrial turned out to be fiberoptic cables that had been knocked loose by the high winds. The downed line at 1309 Woodland was, in fact, a powerline that was resting on a shed at the property, however, the line was simply low-hanging and never became disconnected.
A handful of small outages have been reported both in and around the Emporia area throughout the day likely due to the high winds. If you have a downed line or witness a line down do not approach it and contact Lyon County Emergency Communications to report it.
