The Emporia Mighty Spartans fifth grade football team won the SportZone Championship on Sunday at the EHS Turf Field.
The team began practicing late in July with their season wrapping up this past weekend defeating Basehor-Linwood. Head coach Luke Schnakenberg said it was a great group to coach.
The Mighty Spartans finished the season with a 6-2 record. Along with the fifth grade team, there’s also teams for fourth graders and sixth graders. The program was established in 2022 and plays in the SportZone League based out of Topeka. Schnakenberg said the group was established by John Newland with James Godfrey one to push the program to be established and have the kids ready to go when they get to middle school and high school. Schnakenberg said he’s excited for the future with where the program can go and what current players can do when they play for Emporia Middle School and eventually being an Emporia High Spartan.
