Sunday fire activity at Melvern Wildlife Area temporarily trapped several hunters and a dog.
The Kansas Wildlife & Parks Game Wardens Facebook page says Game Warden Tanner Houck and K-9 Rip began a search for the hunters and dog after two large wildfires developed. Rip found tracks indicating two separate groups of hunters, leading to the discovery of five hunters and a black lab. All were rescued and one vehicle was removed as smoke and ash were falling nearby.
Houck and Public Lands Manager Joe Daniels are investigating.
