It’s listed as a contest that holds water, and Emporia’s water town with the Emporia State University graphics did quite well.
The storage tower on Interstate 35 near Burlingame Road finished in the top 12 as part of the Tank of the Year contest organized by Tnemec to “celebrate art in infrastructure.” The one-million-gallon tank was repainted last year as part of an agreement between the city of Emporia and ESU, including a $75,000 payment from ESU to the city over 10 years. Life-extending renovations to the tank also took place last year as part of a separate project.
Grand Prairie, Texas, won the contest after a discussion by Tnemec contest organizers. College Station, Texas, won the popular vote. The other 10 finalists are not ranked.
