The #11 Emporia State football team couldn’t stop the Fort Hays State running game as the Tigers romped 36-7 over the Hornets at Welch Stadium Saturday. The game was delayed twice due to lightning just outside the Emporia area and rain played a major factor early. Fort Hays State kicked an early field goal before ESU snapped the ball twice over the head of the intended target; once for a loss of 26, and the second time through the back of the end zone for a safety. The first delay occurred late in the first quarter for 38 minutes and out of the break, FHSU’s Shane Watts carried it for a 43-yard touchdown. ESU got on the board with a 45-yard completion from quarterback Gunnar Gundy to Tyler Kahmann, but FHSU answered right back to lead 19-7 at the break. With two minutes left in the halftime warmup, the players were removed from the field again for a 41-minute delay. The Tigers scored four plays into the third quarter and the Hornets never threatened. Head coach Garin Higgins gave credit to the Tigers.
ESU finished with just 165 yards of total offense to 414 for Fort Hays State with the Tigers rushing 55 times for 331 yards. Gunnar Gundy was 17-29 with one touchdown and one interception for the Hornets. Tyler Kahmann caught 5 passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. The loss snapped a nine-game home winning streak for E-State. ESU (7-2, 5-2 MIAA) wraps up their home schedule with Senior Day against Central Missouri next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. Pregame coverage begins at 12:00 p.m. on the Hornet Sports Network. Listen locally on Mix 104.9.
