Bunge staffers are leading an investigation into a fire that damaged a load of old soybeans.
The fire was reported around 8 pm Friday at Emporia’s Bunge plant, 701 East Sixth. Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Tony Fuller says Emporia firefighters served as mutual aid for the company for much of the early firefighting effort. A low-heat fire began damaging around 80,000 bushels in a grain bin on the east side of the complex. The fire was kept to the concrete silo, which was about 25 percent full when the fire started.
There is no word on a cause. Fuller says a Bunge crew from Texas was called in to help. Emporia Fire was released from the scene around 3 am Saturday.
Questions about other aspects of this incident have been referred to Bunge media relations. Bunge has not responded to KVOE News questions seeking details.
