If advance voter turnout is any indication, voting booths will be extremely busy Tuesday.
According to Lyon County Election Officer Tammy Vopat, total advance turnout at the local level reached 4,084 by the advance voting deadline at noon Monday. During an interview on Monday of KVOE’s Morning Show, KVOE asked if Vopat felt the large advance turnout might lead to a slower election day turnout.
Vopat responded saying she and her staff are preparing for a busy day.
For the past month, Vopat has noted her desire to see a better than 70 percent voter turnout by the end of the election cycle which would be a record during her tenure as Lyon County Clerk with the previous high being just over 69 percent back in 2020. Vopat is very confident they will hit that goal by the end of election day Tuesday and similar trends are expected at the state level according to a news release from the office of Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab.
In the release, Schwab stated that as of Friday more than 516,000 advance ballots had been cast reflecting a 25.4 percent turnout across the state. This is just over 125,000 fewer ballots than the total advance turnout for the 2020 election and better than 140,000 more than the 2016 election.
Schwab says based on current projections the state is on track to set a new turnout record and is encouraging all residents to “get out and exercise their constitutional right” on Tuesday.
In addition to discussing voter turnout, Vopat also took time Monday to remind listeners about electioneering laws which do not allow for campaign materials of any kind to be worn or displayed within 200 feet of a polling site. She would go on to express her pride in local voters to adhering to these laws over the past several months saying that individuals have done a wonderful job of “following the rules” in a kind and respectful manner.
Polls will be open Tuesday from 7 am to 7 pm and KVOE will have complete local election coverage beginning shortly after polls close on KVOE 1400 am, 96.9 fm and KVOE.com. We will also have presidential election coverage courtesy of ABC News beginning at 6 pm.
