Drivers are reminded they need to keep their head on a swivel as deer are a constant occurrence on local roadways.
According to Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch in a recent interview with KVOE News, there have already been nine deer versus vehicle collisions reported in Lyon County since mid-October. Koelsch reported there were no major injuries to drivers or passengers as a result of any of the accidents, however, he says the damage to vehicles was extensive as is the case with most crashes of this nature.
While there have so far not been any deer-related accidents reported within Emporia, Koelsch did take time to remind motorists that accidents can and do occur within the city limits not just on rural roadways. With that in mind, he offered some helpful tips to ensure drivers and deer alike reach their destinations safely.
First, drivers should buckle up, always keep their eyes on the road and eliminate all distractions, namely phones and electronic devices, especially when traveling around heavily wooded areas and if you see one deer assume they are not alone and proceed cautiously. If you do believe you are about to strike a deer, Koelsch says do so directly and not try to swerve or evade it.
In the event of a vehicle and deer collision, drivers are required to report crashes involving at least $1,000 in property damage to law enforcement. People wanting to remove a deer carcass from a crash site need to get a salvage tag from deputies at the crash site or from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks.
