State Assessment scores for Emporia Public Schools are trending in the right direction.
Before their regularly scheduled action meeting on Wednesday, the USD 253 Board of Education held a study session reviewing state assessment data from 2024.
Assistant Superintendent of Teaching, Learning, and Student Services Judy Stanley says the biggest takeaway was the board got to dig into the numbers and see the accomplishments the district has had over the past year. Stanley says when looking at growth, they compare year after year to see where students are being successful.
Stanley says the next step is for all of the district’s buildings to look over the data, identify what’s working, and then look at areas where they need to tweak some things
In other business, the Board of Education voted to purchase new band uniforms for Emporia High School for $105,150.07. The purchase will include 135 complete uniforms, eight of which will be designed for Drum Majors. The uniforms will be made by Fruhauf Uniforms Inc. of Wichita.
Emporia High head band director Glenn Woolard says getting new uniforms for the first time since 2005 is exciting.
The uniforms are set to debut at the beginning of the 2025-26 school year. Woolard says with the band set to get new uniforms, he hopes the new uniform purchase will spark an interest in students wanting to perform in the band and get the program back to pre-COVID numbers.
Board members also approved the 2025-26 Emporia High School Course Guide on the first reading. Three Executive Sessions, one for personnel, one for acquisition of property, and one for Superintendent Evaluation were held with no action taking place.
The USD 253 Board of Education will reconvene for its next regularly scheduled meeting at 6 p.m. December 11 at Mary Herbert Education Center.
