Emporia City Commissioners are currently weighing their options for a potential utility rate increase.
During their recent study meeting Friday morning, Commissioners were presented with several options for said increase. While no decisions were made, current indications are pointing towards a 10 percent total rate increase of some kind for water, wastewater and trash.
City Manager Trey Cocking says there were two major causes for Friday’s discussions continued inflation and the dwindling lifespan of city infrastructure.
Cocking tells KVOE News that this is not where the city wants to be and they explored several other avenues for capping costs to avoid a rate increase unfortunately an increase was the only feasible option. City staff have been instructed to begin further developing a proposal to be brought back before commissioners in December.
In separate business Friday, commissioners also discussed new lead and copper-based rule revisions through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and held one executive session with no action taken. Commissioners will reconvene for their next regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, November 20 at 11 am inside of the Municipal Courtroom at White Auditorium.
Cocking will join KVOE’s Talk of Emporia for the monthly Q&A With Trey segment
