The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is getting ready to start its holiday event schedule.
Saturday has its annual Candlelight Tour, with tours beginning at 6 pm and ending with the final tour at 8:45 pm. Residents will go out on the preserve’s gravel and grass paths as the preserve offers “historic first-person vignettes” featuring the Depression era at the Spring Hill ranch.
The event is free, but reservations are required by calling 620-273-8494 extension 270. Tour attendees are told to arrive about 10 minutes ahead of their tour time, dress for the cold, wear sturdy shoes and check in at the visitor center. Flashlights need to be pointed at the ground and flash photography is not allowed.
Following the tours Saturday evening is the Prairie Christmas event Nov. 30. Residents can learn from historic characters discussing old-fashioned “current” events and holiday preparations, as well as singing holiday music, participating in crafts and enjoying readings of “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.”
Activities for the Prairie Christmas are from 12-4 pm.
