With an alarming rate of drivers ignoring the rules of the road when it comes to stopped buses within USD 252 Southern Lyon County, the board of education is taking action to curb the behavior.
During the board’s most recent meeting last Wednesday, members discussed the issue of cars speeding past buses with their stop signs erected. During an interview with KVOE News recently, Superintendent Ryan Muhlig noted this has been a weekly, almost daily, situation.
With this in mind, Muhlig says the district is planning to purchase additional bus cameras to capture images of the offending vehicles in addition to each bus’s forward-facing cameras. Muhlig cannot say when those cameras may be purchased but notes that additional information will be presented to board members at their next regular meeting in December.
Muhlig is also hopeful that spreading the word about the infractions and the district’s steps to address them will help curb the issue somewhat until the cameras can be bought and installed.
In other business last Wednesday, board members also discussed a change in the structure of substitute pay. According to Muhlig, the district currently pays between $100 to $230 per day for substitutes based on different variables.
In comparison to other districts in the area, Muhlig says 252 is on the lower end of substitute compensation. He says the district is currently looking into ways to increase that pay which may involve “simplifying the system” for future years.
Also during their agenda last week, board members reviewed the 2024 audit report which Muhlig says came back “clean as can be.” The USD 252 Board of Education is set to reconvene in December for its final meeting of 2024.
