The Emporia State women’s basketball team fell behind early and couldn’t keep East Central off the glass in a 79-67 loss to the Tigers at White Auditorium in Emporia on Friday night. ECU bolted to an 11-0 run to start the game, but ESU answered with a 21-5 run to take a 5-point lead early in the second. The Tigers hit free throws down the stretch to take a 36-33 lead to the locker room at the half. The Lady Hornets played a back-and-forth third but ECU ended the period with the last six points to lead 59-53 heading to the fourth. ESU missed its first eight threes of the fourth and the Tigers built a double-digit lead that they held onto for the win. E-State was outrebounded by 16 in the game and was outscored 22-11 in second-chance points. Head coach Brian Ostermann said ECU deserved the credit.
Katie Horyna led the Lady Hornets with 22 points on 9 of 14 shooting with five rebounds. Elizabeth Tjaden added 13. ESU returns to action for “Field Trip Day” Monday hosting Ottawa at noon. Several hundred elementary school kids are expected to attend. Coverage begins at 11:30 a.m. on the Hornet Sports Network/Mix 104.9.
The Emporia State men couldn’t hold on to an 11-point halftime lead and fell to Fort Lewis College 82-71 at Brownson Arena in Grand Junction, Co. on Friday. The Hornets led 37-33 at the half and built a 45-34 lead less than two minutes into the second half, but FLC hit five threes in the span of just over two minutes to catapult in front on a 19-3 run. The Hornets took the lead back by one moments later, but the Skyhawks gradually pulled away after that for the win. Malik Edwards Jr finished with 19 points while Brayson Laube added 14. ESU returns to action tomorrow against Colorado-Mesa.
