The final renovation project through USD 253 Emporia’s Building for the Future bond campaign has recently reached a notable milestone.
Superintendent Allison Anderson-Harder:
Anderson-Harder says crews have been busy the past few weeks.
Adaptive Special Education teacher Kate Wiggins says all the work is designed to enhance the learning environment.
Renovations and new construction at William Allen White have included a new cafeteria, kitchen and multipurpose room to double as a storm shelter. Renovations are also taking place in existing classrooms, with upgrades for mechanical and electrical systems, an expansion of the front office and more off-street parking also involved. Renovations launched after the district briefly considered “pausing” operations at the school two years ago.
Emporia voters approved the nearly $80 million Building for the Future bond package in 2019 after a year’s worth of public conversations. Work began in 2020, near the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
