The Emporia State Lady Hornets had an extra 300 special guests in attendance for their victory over Ottawa Monday afternoon.
Emporia State University, in partnership with USD 253 Emporia and Sacred Heart Catholic School, hosted the inaugural field trip day game inside of White Auditorium welcoming fifth graders from all district schools and Sacred Heart. ESU Senior Associate Athletics Director in charge of External Relations Darian Westerfield says the day was a great success giving it a “10 out of 10.”
Westerfield says he hopes this is just the start of a great tradition in Emporia.
USD 253 Emporia Superintendent Dr. Allison Anderson Harder agreed with Westerfield and says for many of their students Monday may have been the first time they have ever been to a college basketball game in person. She says the district is always pleased to be able to help make long-lasting memories for their students.
In addition to the basketball game, students in attendance enjoyed a sack lunch courtesy of ESU, games and a halftime teachers Olympics competition that included a hula hoop contest won by Village Elementary School teacher Alex Vahsholtz and musical chairs won by Sacred Heart School Principal Curtis Simons.
