The Emporia High wrestling teams will be the first Spartan athletic teams to open the winter season on Wednesday.
The Spartans and the Lady Spartans will open up the season with duels at Kapaun Mt. Carmel.
The Spartans are ranked 10th in Class 5A with five wrestlers ranked: Kolton Wyatt sixth at 106, Gabe Wassom second at 113, Isaiah Morales fourth at 126, Dustin Dobson fifth at 150 and Christian Trujillo fifth at 157. Emporia High boys wrestling coach Brook Medrano likes his lineup from top to bottom.
The first home competition for the Spartans will be Dec. 21st with the Winter Classic.
The Lady Spartans also have five wrestlers ranked: Allison Curtis sixth at 100, Kensley Medrano fourth at 120, Claire Starr fifth at 125, Yaneli Carranza fifth at 140, and Alexa Castillo second at 235. Emporia High girls wrestling coach Shawn Russell said he likes his team.
The first home competition for the Lady Spartans will be on Saturday with the EHS Invitational at 9 a.m. Due to the EHS boys hosting a junior varsity tournament at Emporia High, the girls tournament will be held at Emporia Middle School.
