The Emporia High boys swim and dive team will open the season on Thursday with its first home meet of the season.
Emporia High will have a new head coach guiding the way with Phil Metz taking over the program after serving as an assistant coach under previous head coach Jamie Dawson. Metz said the transition to head coach has been an adjustment and makes it easier for him to know who he’s coached previously.
Emporia High returns senior Logan Woydziak, a state qualifier from a season ago. Woydziak will be focusing on the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. Woydziak said the offseason has been huge for him.
Behind Woydziak, Metz said the Spartans’ sophomore class will strongly contribute and even include freshmen as well. Metz said there are nerves and excitement about the first meet of the season.
Emporia High does have one diver out in Mark Decker, but will not be competing in Thursday’s meet. Decker will be coached by Haylee Weiss, a 3-time state champion at EHS from 2016-19 and holds the 6-dive and 11-dive school records on the girls side.
The swim portion of the meet will begin at 4 p.m. at the EHS pool.
