On the surface, it may seem Monday’s announcement of Tyson Foods ending all local operations over the next two months would have a major impact on local and area agriculture. But Lyon County Extension Ag Agent Brian Rees tells KVOE News that doesn’t appear to be the case.
On the crop side, Rees says hasn’t been much use of local feed since Tyson ended its local slaughter operation over 15 years ago.
Tyson is planning to end its local lab operations before Christmas and shut down the plant at Sixth and Prairie on or about Valentine’s Day. The company has told city officials its decision to bolster operations in Holcomb instead of Emporia was designed to “optimize” its operations.
