Plans are now in place at the city level to help the workers being displaced by the Holiday Resort and Tyson Foods closures announced earlier this week.
A Rapid Response and Kansas Department of Labor set of meetings is coming Dec. 18 and Dec. 19 to the Bowyer Community Building. Sessions beginning at 11:30 am and 1:30 pm are for employees of both businesses, while the sessions beginning at 3:45 pm will be strictly for Tyson workers. The focus will be on unemployment benefits.
Those sessions will be followed by a job fair and resource fair from 11 am to 5 pm Jan. 8, with the job fair at the Fairgrounds Anderson Building and the the resource event at the Bowyer Building. The United Way of the Flint Hills is spearheading the resource fair, while Southeast KansasWorks is in charge of the job fair.
Tyson’s closure announcement Dec. 2 is meaning the displacement of over 800 employees. Holiday Resort’s announcement the following day impacts over 100 staffers.
The dates and times follow a Rapid Response meeting Wednesday morning and come as Flint Hills Technical College has announced it is waiving admission and enrollment fees for displaced workers for classes and trainings this upcoming semester.
